Artist Statement

Foundations is an ongoing series cataloguing nineteenth-century corset styles, using the daguerreotype, the first photographic process.  Clothing has been used to shape, lift, smooth and control women’s bodies throughout time—whether with Victorian corsets, 1950’s girdles, punk bustiers, or contemporary Spanx.  Foundations focuses on this hardware by photographing historically-accurate corsets without sexualizing the wearer.

This project would not be possible without the handmade corsets created by Kristen Demanett.
